Twenty Licensed Blood Components. One Life-Saving Purpose.

A single unit of donated blood carries more potential than most people realise. Separated with the right equipment and expertise, it becomes red cells for a patient in surgery, plasma for someone in liver failure, platelets for a cancer patient, and cryoprecipitate for a bleeding disorder — each component going to exactly the patient who needs it.

Jeevan Jyoti Blood Centre & Components was Central India’s first facility to offer this level of component separation, and today we prepare and issue twenty licensed blood components and services under our FDA licence (ND/BB/11). The table below sets out what each component is, what it treats, and how it’s stored — information every referring doctor, hospital and curious donor should be able to find easily.

Blood ComponentDescriptionPrimary UsesStorage TemperatureShelf Life
Whole Human BloodBlood containing red cells, plasma, platelets and clotting factorsMassive blood loss, exchange transfusion (limited use)2-6°C35 days (CPDA-1) or up to 42 days (additive solution)
Concentrate of Human Red Cells (Packed Red Cells)Red blood cells with most plasma removedTreatment of anaemia and acute blood loss2-6°C35-42 days (depending on preservative)
Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP)Plasma frozen soon after collection to preserve clotting factorsCoagulation factor deficiencies, liver disease, massive transfusion≤ -18°CUp to 1 year at ≤ -18°C; longer at colder temperatures per policy
Platelet ConcentratePlatelets prepared from whole bloodPrevention and treatment of bleeding due to thrombocytopenia20-24°C with continuous agitation5-7 days
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)Plasma containing a high concentration of plateletsPreparation of platelet concentrates; select therapeutic uses20-24°CProcessed promptly; if transfused, 5-7 days
Red Blood Cells (Leukoreduced / Leucodepleted)Packed red cells with most white cells removedReduces febrile reactions, CMV transmission risk, HLA alloimmunisation2-6°C35-42 days
Cryoprecipitate (AHF)Concentrated fibrinogen, Factor VIII, Factor XIII, vWF and fibronectinHypofibrinogenemia, massive haemorrhage, Factor XIII deficiency≤ -18°CUp to 1 year
Platelets - LeucodepletedPlatelet concentrate with reduced leukocyte contentReduced risk of febrile reactions or alloimmunisation20-24°C with agitation5-7 days
Liquid Plasma / Single Donor PlasmaPlasma separated but not frozen immediatelyPlasma protein replacement (limited indications), fractionation1-6°CUp to 5 days (varies by regulation)
Cryoprecipitate Reduced Plasma (Cryo Poor Plasma)Plasma remaining after cryoprecipitate removalTherapeutic plasma exchange (e.g. TTP), coagulation support≤ -18°CUp to 1 year
Apheresis Leukocytes / LeukocytopheresisLeukocyte concentrate collected by apheresisSevere neutropenia with life-threatening infection (rare indication)20-24°CTransfuse as soon as possible, within 24 hours
Apheresis Platelet / Single Donor Platelets (SDP)Platelets collected from one donor by apheresisPlatelet transfusion with reduced donor exposure20-24°C with agitation5-7 days
Apheresis Hematopoietic Stem Cells (Peripheral Blood Stem Cells)Peripheral blood stem cells collected by apheresisHematopoietic stem cell transplantation2-8°C short-term; ≤ -150°C cryopreservedFresh: up to 72 hours; cryopreserved: years under validated storage
Granulocyte ConcentrateConcentrated granulocytes collected by apheresisSevere neutropenia with refractory infections20-24°CTransfuse within 24 hours
Saline Washed Red Blood CellsRed cells washed to remove plasma proteinsSevere allergic transfusion reactions, IgA deficiency1-6°CWithin 24 hours of washing (closed/open system dependent)
Packed Red Cell AliquotsSmall-volume aliquots of packed red cellsNeonatal and paediatric transfusions2-6°CUp to 24 hours after aliquoting in an open system (method-dependent)
Leukoreduced Single Donor Platelets by ApheresisApheresis platelets with leukocyte reductionPlatelet support with reduced alloimmunisation and febrile reactions20-24°C with agitation5-7 days
Pooled PlateletsPlatelets pooled from multiple whole-blood donationsTreatment of thrombocytopenia and bleeding20-24°C with agitation5-7 days (per local regulation after pooling)
Pooled CryoprecipitateMultiple cryoprecipitate units pooled before transfusionRapid fibrinogen replacement in bleeding patients≤ -18°C frozen; 20-24°C after thawingFrozen: up to 1 year; after thawing, use within 4-6 hours
PBSC - Stem Cell HarvestPeripheral blood stem cell collection for transplantationAutologous or allogeneic stem cell transplantation2-8°C fresh; ≤ -150°C cryopreservedFresh: within 72 hours; cryopreserved: years under validated storage
